Welcome to the jungle we've got fun and games
We got everything you want honey, we know the names
We are the people that can find whatever you may need
If you got the money honey we got your disease...
GNR, "Welcome to the Jungle"
The
Concrete Jungle
To the
south of Keelung City is one the jewels of Taiwan, Taipei. The city encompasses
an enormous expanse of concrete sprinkled with a few trees and planters for aesthetic
beauty. The area called Taipei includes a number of smaller cities and
counties. This is what causes most of the travelers in Taiwan to become
confused and ultimately disoriented. The international airport, which is where
every inbound flight coming from anywhere overseas flies, is listed as arriving
in Taipei. This is strictly not where the airport is located. The airport is
located in a city called Taichung. There is a small airport located in the city
of Taipei, but the only flights coming in and out of this airport are what
Americans would consider domestic. This means they fly to places such as Japan,
China, The Philippines, Thailand, and India. The definition of domestic takes
on an altered meaning, but hey, that’s the way we do it in Taiwan. Once a
person understands how we accomplish things in Taiwan life becomes infinitely
easier.
The
actual city of Taipei could be the twin of any large city in America. The only differences
being the pedestrians don’t have the right of way and end up playing a game of
chicken with the traffic. From the freeway it looks like any other city in this
country, large, crowded, and dirty, but when one finally arrives on the actual
streets of the city a sense of awe and being insignificant washes over you. The
city of Taipei is clean, beautiful, and doesn’t smell putrid, like some other
cities. The buildings resemble giant faceless sentries all seeming to be
standing watch over a central keepsake. Walking around one can’t help but to
notice this huge spire reaching toward the heavens. This defiant building can
be seen from any point in the city. Taipei 101 is world famous and all roads in
the city seem to lead to this massive landmark. Taiwan is proud of this modern
marvel and once was the tallest building in the world. Japan, causing anger and
resentment, soon built what is now the tallest building in the world, and
stripped Taiwan of the honor. Taipei 101 is a true testament to the culture of
this country. The building is a 101 floor mecca of materialism and gluttony.
Jing-Xi's thought for the day: People are the same every where. The only true difference between people is their birth country. People are petty, greedy, and obsessed with the god of this world, money. It is incorrect to think this is solely an American issue. This is an epidemic world wide and everyone is guilty. People are never satisfied with or grateful for what they have been given. They want bigger, better, and name brand. Someone needs to explain how Coco Chanel is better than other brands. Seems like people have forgotten a few important things along the way. One of those being, you can't take it with you when you die. Death the great and final equalizer.

Stone Lion: These are decorations to the outside of buildings. I think they are stone, but could be made from some type of metal. I named this one Herbbie. :) His brother Sam sits right beside him and they are twins.

This is a commercial being filmed. The guy in the wheel chair would roll down a hill and say "blah blah". Not sure what they are planning to sell, but cool.

This sign posted on a giant rock wall tells people to not dive or swim in the water below. I guess Taiwanese people are as dumb as Americans. The water below is not very deep and one would die if you tried to dive into the pool.

Shane hugging a giant headed cartoon thingy. Love at first sight!
Big head Batman thing, complete with bat car. Makes me think about doogie doogie bat dog, bat dog. :)
Family allowing small son drive bat car.
Some type of statue. The city is full of things like this.
Big headed space girl.
Big headed Flash Gordon maybe? Not sure.
Big headed love and rainbows thingy. Anyone notice the doohickys are all white? This is because the Taiwanese people avoid the sun at all costs. Not because they don't want skin cancer, but because they do not want to become what they call "black".

Cool statue thingy.
Notice the people with the umbrella? It's not raining, but the sun is out. Maybe vampires are real and they are all living in Taiwan. I have seen bats.... Hmmm I wonder.
Another group walking in the sun. This was a beautiful day. The weather was perfect! The weather was warm, but not hot and the sun made you feel so happy.
Fountain located outside of Taipei 101. This giant ball floats on the top of the water.
Christmas tree located on bottom floor of Taipei 101.
The strange statue things are not just outside. The Taiwanese people love to take pictures of everything. Also little known fact, they will stand and wait in line patiently for long periods of time without knowing why or for what they are waiting.

The ball thingy was pretty cool!
See how cool? I wanted to go for a dip, but the water wasn't heated and people would have stared. I probably would have been deported.

The ball theme was everywhere we looked. I think because this was very close to Christmas. However, the Taiwanese do not celebrate Christmas. They do respect other cultures and make an effort. I found this a very nice gesture.
